Known as the "Bluff City" and located on the banks of the mighty Mississippi River in southwestern Tennessee, Memphis is the cultural and economic center of the Mid-South. Home of the Blues and the birthplace of Rock and Roll, music lovers flock to Memphis to see Graceland, the home of Elvis, historic Beale Street, Sun Studio, and the Stax Museum.
Memphis has over 15 hospitals and countless other medical facilities that make it the major medical center in the area. Memphis is home to St. Jude Children's Research Hospital, a Nobel Prize winning facility that is world renown for helping children overcome devastating childhood diseases. Memphis is also home to the Baptist Memorial Health Care Corporation, a world class not-for-profit hospital system that operates 17 hospitals and numerous other health care facilities, including one of only 15 hospitals in the nation dedicated solely for women. With a land grant from Baptist Memorial Health Care Corporation and in conjunction with the University of Tennessee at Memphis and St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital, a new biotech research park will be built next to the University of Tennessee College of Medicine making it one of the largest biotech research facilities in higher education.
Memphis has a strong business community. As the headquarters of Federal Express and a major airline hub, Memphis is one of America's largest distribution centers. Additionally, Memphis is home to three Fortune 500 companies. Southern Business and Development magazine has placed Memphis in the top ten markets for the past decade.
The Memphis Zoo, Mud Island, Memphis in May, the NBA Grizzlies, the Redbirds Baseball Team, and Riverkings Hockey are all popular attractions for residents and visitors alike. Memphis is home to a wide range of museums, performing arts groups, and cultural exhibits, including the WONDERS International Cultural Series and the National Civil Rights Museum. Memphis has a strong spiritual community with a large base of active churches and synagogues.
