Diagnostic Medical Sonography (Ultrasound) at BCHS

Mitzi Roberts, Chair, Diagnostic Medical Sonography (Ultrasound)

Message from the Chair of Diagnostic Medical Sonography:

Is a career in sonography for you? Try answering the following questions:

  • Does your curiosity get the best of you?
  • Do you like working independently?
  • Are you self-motivated and directed?
  • Do you like to analyze things?

If you answered YES then sonography may be for you. Diagnostic Medical Sonography (DMS) is commonly called ultrasound. This imaging profession combines the knowledge of anatomy, physiology, pathology, and the use of computerized technology to aid in the diagnoses of medical conditions.

Sonographers use sound waves to evaluate the human body anatomy and blood flow circulation. While performing a sonographic examination, sonographers use independent judgment to accurately image anatomy and differentiate between normal and pathological findings. As part of the health care team, sonographers work under the direct supervision of physicians. Sonographers will provide images like those below to help provide a physician with the information needed to provide a diagnosis for a patient.
